Description:  Our client is seeking an Assembly Process Engineer. The responsibilities of this position include the following:
  • Develop and document processes for assembly and testing of optical, mechanical, and electronic systems for military, space, medical, industrial, and consumer products
  • Contribute as a member of integrated product development teams comprising engineers, physicists, assemblers, customers, suppliers, etc.
  • Provide design-for-assembly and design-to-cost guidance to optical, mechanical, electrical design engineers
  • Review drawings, schematics, specifications, statements-of-work and process instructions to identify opportunities and concerns
  • Generate assembly and tooling labor and cost estimates for bids and proposals
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles to conceive and document procedures for precise alignment and positioning of parts, adhesive delivery/curing processes and performance testing of assemblies
  • Write and illustrate concise assembly instructions and training aids using MS Office, voice-recognition software, CAD software, still photography and video
  • Develop custom tooling and fixturing design concepts
  • Train and work closely with assembly operators and trainers to improve processes and troubleshoot faults
  • Design experiments, observe, analyze, and report test data
  • Chart process flow during planning and methodization phase
  • Represent company technically at customer meetings, conferences and marketing functions
Requirements:  The skills, experience, and education required for this position include the following:
  • BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Optical Engineering
  • One year of experience in an optics assembly manufacturing environment, with demonstrated problem-solving results during past assignments
  • Oral and written skills necessary for effective interaction with assembly and fabrication operators
  • Experience reading or producing technical drawings or electronic schematics
  • Experience in troubleshooting electronic and/or software problems
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Windows platform and Office software
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of mechanical processes, equipment, and metrology sufficient to troubleshoot part defects and to conceive prototypes, tooling and fixtures of simple-to-moderate complexity
  • Knowledge and practice of engineering for ergonomics and safety
  • Ability to multi-task, innovate, solve problems and maintain a positive success-oriented attitude while working with a diverse array of personnel
  • Enthusiastic self-starter and task-completer with strong people skills
  • Must be able to study a problem, pose several solutions and propose the best choice for management/team approval
  • High preference for hands-on experience in electro-optical assembly and cleanrooms
  • Experience in the use of electronic test equipment, precision alignment/metrology equipment such as laser alignment, bore sighting, interferometers, etc.
Desire working, practical knowledge of:
  • Mechanical materials, adhesives, and industrial chemicals
  • Industrial environmental, health, ergonomics, and safety
  • Laser safety
  • Statistical process control
  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD/T)
  • IR optical systems
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and Six Sigma techniques to reduce factory inefficiencies and to apply lessons learned
